The poem Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle Received from a Friend Called Felicity to me is about summer as a child. The time when you could just go outside in the fresh air and play with friends and have no worries. Every once in a while I still wish that I could still just go outside and run, but I know that I have responsibilities. This poem most describes the little imaginary world that I was in when I was younger, where I ruled the world and only had to follow the rules that I chose to. One summer when I was about 7 my best friend from across the street and I decided that we were going to create a restaurant for the squirrels. Every day after playing around we would find acorns, leaves and pine-cones and fix them into little salads. Even though the next day the food would be in the same place we always thought that the squirrels liked he food. Imagination is an important thing to have during the summer and this pom captures it perfectly.

1. Why do some people disapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water?
2. What would your position be on adding fluoride to drinking water and why?
3. What technological advances in toothpaste had to be made before fluoride could be widely used in toothpaste and mouthwashes?
4. What side effects of using fluoride in drinking water are of most concern to you? Why?
Many people disapprove of the addition of fluoride to drinking water because of the many harmful affects it is thought to have. Small children sometimes ingest too much fluoride from the water that they drink develop dental fluorosis which causes tooth decay and damages the tooth cells. Fluoride is not even an essential nutrient, was not approved by the FDA, and is listed as a contaminate by the EPA. Ingesting too much fluoride can also cause fluoride poisoning.
I do not think fluoride should be added to water. I believe that fluorine causes more harm to people than help. Though it helps the teeth of all no matter what socioeconomic class ( as long as they have running water) there are still many faults in how it is added to tap water. I feel that if there is any fault possibility of there being problems it should be removed. At times it may not cause too much harm, but 32% American children are impacted by the low self esteem that dental fluorosis brings.http://www.apfn.org/apfn/flouride.htm
Before fluoride could be widely used in toothpaste a substance that was compatible and abrasive had to be found. In 1955 calcium pyrophosphate was found by Proctor & Gamble and was launched through the creation of crest toothpaste. Basically something needed to be combined with fluoride before it could really be used.
The side effect of floride use in water is the malted and decaying look of patient’s teeth with dental fluorosis. It causes low self esteem for many patients and definitely in children. There are treatments to help the damage that is made by the decaying of enamel, but the treatments are very costly and sometimes have to be kept up.
